We have reported earlier about the launch and also some great first hands on experience  and footage on the DJI Inspire 1 “prosumer” (higher end consumer, almost professional) quadcopter. In the post about the launch, we highlighted one new function which is called the Vision Positioning System. It is an ingenious solution to avoid flyaways previously characteristic of early Phantom maodels, DJI’s new Optical Flow technology uses a specially designed camera as well as sonic waves to bring simplicity to flying indoors. This technology allows the the DJI Inspire 1 to hold its position, stop when the controls are released, and respond to your commands even when GPS is unavailable.

Our friends at Skynamic put this capability to the test and the result is this video shot using the dual operator control.

This is a good demonstration of additional safety functionality amidst all the media turbulence and sensationalist reports about drones these days. Like to one earlier in WSJ (opens behind a paywall and it is very depressing anyway) and the Lame TGI Friday’s PR stunt that went totally sideways hitting a reporter in the face. This later one by Brooklyn Daily headlines it “Drone Strike” and uses the word “disaster” which is a bit off.  I don’t now about you guys, but I am getting a bit numbed by all these reports, so we would like to concentrate on good things. Of course we can not neglect safety hazards and the impending new regulations shaping the industry and the future of our hobby. But let’s concentrate on the positive aspects as I feel this technology is here to stay, so regulators and the public as well as media will have to find a way to live with it in piece for the benefit of all parties involved.
