Drone Graffiti Artists Major Breakthrough with Anti-Trump Tag
Graffiti artist Katsu made it very clear in his very first attempt of drone painting that no one is above anyone’s reach anymore. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the new President of U.S. or not. In a world where we can now do a lot of things with drones, painting with a drone is not a new thing.
In 2015, Katsu made his first appearance with his Icarus One drone, where he spilled paint all over a model face on a billboard. It was quite a big billboard. As it was the first time, Katsu didn’t have much knowledge and control of what he was doing. Making the models face defaced was not the only outcome, but also Katsu realized that this drone painting could be used for a better cause.
With that believe Katsu made his second appearance on the net with anti-Trump tag. When we see people spraying on the wall, we don’t react much like we used to. But spraying tags with a drone? That’s on a whole new level.
One sure can’t digest this easily. As a result, this got viral, and people realized that it could be a way to express love/hatred /emotions.
Another advantage of this was being anonymous. You want to let the world know something but only being anonymous. How do you plan to do that? Drone painting can be a great solution to that. Even structures that were previously unreachable can now be reached by drones. It’s a great way of showing your emotions, what you believe to the world.
People are now even painting their wall with drone spray. The principle here is a brush will be attached to your drone. And you will control your drone to dip the brush in paints. Then your drone will fly towards the wall and color it with the paint.
The main drawback here is it’s extremely time-consuming. Not only it takes a lot of time; it isn’t very efficient either. You can try it in your backyard.
In 2015, University of Maryland hosted a hackathon that involved drone painting in it. The project included a huge canvas. There were 200 participants in the event. The goal was to paint the canvas with different colors using the drone. There were buckets filled with colors.
Some people were making paintballs. And others were attaching the paintballs with the drones. Then the final task was to fly the drone above the canvas and then release the paintballs so that it could hit the canvas. Soon the white canvas became colorful with the hit of 200 different paint balls containing different colors. It was beautiful to look.
While the drone paint was becoming fun to look. It was going nowhere. Apart from throwing paintballs and making a random artistic painting, no particular design was possible to make. And for that reason, Katsu thought that it was time to make something new. Something that can make the drone spraying a lot easier.
Katsu created a unique mechanism that can be controlled by PC. The biggest problem while drone painting was it was next to impossible to make something according to our mind. Katsu changed the whole concept of it. With the mechanism, it is now possible to draw any letter we want. There’s no shaky movement anymore. The drone can control its movement smoothly, and at the same time it can spray paint and create letters. We’ve already seen the results with Katsu’s anti-Trump tag.
After some time we got one more system from Constantin Clauzel from the Hackerloop. This is better than Katsu. The main principle here is drones get attached to the wall and thus be more stable. As it’s a fixed position drone can’t move independently. It is great when it comes to stability. But if you’re thinking of individual movement then this is probably not the best option to choose. The combination of these two mechanisms can be the ultimate solution.
Some more amazing features are also available now. With the help of Simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) drones can now make the 3D model of an entire building. Once people get the whole 3D model, they can make the plan of painting the entire building at once.
Drones have evolved a lot in the last couple of years. What seemed impossible before is now possible with drones. Sure there’s a lot of room for improvement. But with one step each day, we’re slightly moving towards a better future.
