Ice Takes Over Lake Balaton in Drone Video
Időkép is a great social weather service and phone application that operates in Hungary, East Central Europe (also home to the Dronethusiat.com editorial team). They operate their own little quadcopter (a DJI Phantom for a change) making continuous observations of weather conditions but users also upload their own videos and images.
This mesmerizing drone video demonstrates how ice caused by the sudden and unusually cold weather hitting the Lake Balaton area helps ice take over the large surface of water. That combined with relatively high winds of 30-40 kilometers per hour results in unique ice formations on the lake surface, rather than a smooth, skateable “ice rink”.
Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe and one of Hungary’s foremost tourist destinations. If you ever visit the region, be sure to spend some time at the lake!
This video was not filmed as professionally as A Drone in Iceland, the winner of the Best Videos of 2014 but it definitely stands out for the special weather situation and the harsh conditions it was filmed in.
